Biography
Christopher Plummer (1929–2021) was one of Canada’s most celebrated actors, known for his vast range and longevity in film, television, and theater. Born in Toronto and raised in Montreal, Plummer initially trained in theater and made his Broadway debut in 'The Starcross Story' in 1954. He gained international fame with his portrayal of Captain von Trapp in the 1965 classic 'The Sound of Music', though he was initially ambivalent about the role. Throughout his career, Plummer became renowned for his versatility, moving seamlessly between Shakespearean roles—such as Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth—and modern cinema. His later film career included critically acclaimed performances in 'The Insider' (1999), 'Beginners' (2010), for which he won an Academy Award. He was the oldest actor to ever win an Oscar and continued acting into his nineties, earning widespread respect for his commitment to his craft. Plummer also enjoyed success in television, earning multiple Emmy Awards, and on the stage, winning two Tony Awards. Known for his professionalism, wit, and charm, Plummer was a beloved figure in the performing arts until his passing in 2021 at the age of 91.
